His Excellency Most Rev. Joseph Pathalil who hails from the Kottayam District of Kerala, was born on 26 January 1937. He was ordained a priest for Diocese of Ajmer in the year 1963. As a good pastor he worked in three different mission stations namely 3 years in Maska Mahuri as Assistant Parish Priest and six years in Ambapara as Parish Priest and twelve years in Holy Spirit Church, Dungarpur. While at Dungarpur the Lord called him to be the Shepherd of the Diocese of Udaipur in 1984 when it was bifurcated from the Diocese of Ajmer. He was consecrated a Bishop on the 14th of February, 1984. Bishop Joseph who was the first Bishop of Udaipur led the Diocese to its glory for 27 Years. He submitted his resignation to the Holy Father in the year 2012 and then Most Rev. Devprasad Ganawa was appointed as his successor. Bishop Joseph now lives a retired life at St. Paul Fathers residence at Udaipur.
